FFT036MAKE EVERY DAY A TRAINING DAY…SO THAT EVERYONE GOES HOME16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives: Define & advocate the need for a cultural change within the fire service relating to safety; incorporating leadership, management, supervision, accountability & personal responsibility. Enhance the personal & organizational accountability for health & safety throughout the fire service. Focus greater attention on the integration of risk management with incident management at all levels, including strategic, tactical, & planning responsibilities. All firefighters must be empowered to stop unsafe practices. Develop & implement national standards for training, qualifications & certifications(including regular recertification) that are equally applicable to all firefighters based on the duties they are expected to perform. Develop & implement national medical & physical fitness standards that are equally applicable to all firefighters, based on the duties they are expected to perform. Create a national research agenda & data collection system that relates to the initiatives. Utilize available technology wherever it can produce higher levels of health & safety. Thoroughly investigate all firefighter fatalities, injuries, & near misses. Grant programs should support the implementation of safe practices &/or mandate safe practices as an eligibility requirement. National standards for emergency response policies & procedures should be developed & championed. National protocols for response to violent incidents should be developed & championed. Firefighters & their families must have access to counseling & psychological support. Public education must receive more resources & be championed as a critical fire & life safety program. Advocacy must be strengthened for the enforcement of codes & the installation of home fire sprinklers. Safety must be a primary consideration in the design of apparatus & equipment.

FFT072"BREAD & BUTTER" OPERATIONS: CAR FIRES31 MINUTES Properly responding to and extinguishing a car fire is an essetnial skill that all firefighters must master. Chief Doug Leihbacher walks us through properly responding to a vehicle fire, the hazards associated with this type of call, and how to properly extinguish the fire, whether it is in the engine, trunk, or passenger compartment. Chief Leihbacher discusses the safety systems and materials in vehicles that we must be aware of in order to stay safe on the fireground. These include magnesium as well as air bags and struts.
FFT073"BREAD & BUTTER" OPERATIONS: GROUND LADDERS33 Minutes Lt. Mike Ciampo walks us through the proper use of ground ladders on the fireground. Ciampo illustrates commonsense approaches to quickly and safely place and adjust ground ladders and variopus leg lock techniques to use while working on ground ladders. He highlights unconventional ways to utilize ground ladders to help rescue a firefighter as well as make the job safer, easier, and more efficient.
FFT074"BREAD & BUTTER" OPERATIONS: SCBA28 Minutes Chief Phil Jose covers the daily check, which includes the (visual and operational) check of SCBA as well as the proper way to donand doff SCBA. Once SCBA is donned, it is crucial to follow the rule of air management (ROAM). Chief Jose explains ROAM, how to use it on the fireground, and walks you through properly addressing an SCBA emergency, such as low-air emergency or facepiece problem. On the fireground, air equals time, and proper use and maintenance of SCBA is a skill cruicial to giving a firefighter the time to get in, do the job, and get out of a hazard zone safely.
FFT075"BREAD & BUTTER" OPERATIONS: FIRE STREAMS31 Minutes Aaron Fields discusses the various fire streams options available to today's firefighters and how to properly use them to effectively, effciently, and safely operate during fire attack. Firefighter Fields illustrates the variables that occur on the fireground such as water flow, air flow, temperature, and the changing pressure dynamic when water converts to steam. To safely and quickly mitigate a brea-and-butter fire, it is important that today's firefighters understand how to change the dynamic on the fireground. This dynamic is directly related to their selection and use of fire streams.
FFT076"BREAD & BUTTER" OPERATIONS: SEARCH AND RESCUE28 Minutes Properly searching a structure is a bread-and-butter skill that all firefighters must master. Through the history of the fire service, many different search techniques have gained popularity. Chief John "Skip" Coleman discusses the strengths and waknesses of these techinques and explains why oriented search is the new standard for fireground search for bread-and-butter structures. Chief Coleman explains the duties of the officer in chargbe of the search, when to search, where to search, and the importance of maintaining continuity ofsearch. Chief Coleman then looks at a few common misconceptions of search.
FFT077"BREAD & BUTTER" OPERATIONS: VENTILATION25 Minutes Properly and effectively venting a structure is a bread-and-butter operation that all firefighters must master. In this DVD, firefighter Joe Alvarez looks at the basic characteristics of smoke and heat and shows us how to use those characteristics to properly vent a fire. This DVD examines voth horizontal and vertical, the two primary ways to vent a fire using natural ventilation. Firefighter Alvarez covers the various types of roofs and discusses the ventilaion team that performs the ventilation, when to ventilate, the importance of proper communication on the roof, and the numerous techniques to open up a roof safely and effectively.
FFT078"BREAD & BUTTER" OPERATIONS: INITIAL ATTACK LINES26 minutes Understanding how to properly estimate the length of hose needed on the fireground, stretching that hose into place, and then advancing it into and through the structure are key skills that all firefighters must master. Chief Jeff Shupe walks us through estimating the stretch for various common structures. He then discusses how to preplan effectively and measures the stretch for unusual structures you may find in your response ares. Chief Shupe discusses various ways to minmize the stretch and potentially shorten the time needed to get the line into operation. When stretching a line into position, firefighters usually have access to both static and preconnected attack line. This DVD looks at the benefits of both systems. Once the line is stretched into place, Chief Shupe discusses how to properly advance the line through the structure to effectively get water on the fire.
FFT079TACTICAL PERSPECTIVES - COMMAND41 minutes Lt. Frank Ricci and Anthony Avillo, contributing editor for Fire Engineering, illustrate the perspective of command. They outline the need for planning to avoid issues, size-up to address problems on the fireground, as well as important tactical considerations during the execution of command. From the command tactical perspective, they review the issues involved in a room-and-contents fire, anattic fire, and a basement fire

From the fire attack tactical perspective, they then review the issues involved in a room-and-contents fire, anattic fire, and a basement fire.
FFT081TACTICAL PERSPECTIVE- VENTILATION28 minutes Lt Frank Ricci and P.J. Norwood, Deputy Chief of the East Haven (CT) Fire Department, illustrate the perspective of ventilation. They outline the importance of coordinating ventilation with the other disciplines on the fireground.Ricci and Norwwod discuss the tyoes of ventilation and when to vent for for fire versus venting for life, as well as the timing issues involved with proper ventilation. Ricci and Norwood also discuss positive pressure ventialtion. From the ventilation tactical perspective, they then review the issues involved in a room-and -contents fire, an attic fire, and a basement fire.
